Directed by Tarsem Singh
Tarsem doesn`t make a lot of movies, but when he does, he does em well.
I liked TheCell for its visuals, less for the story, and The Fall, in my eyes, is utterly brilliant.
Now, here he enters the world of greek mythology. And again, the visuals are breathtaking
Eons after the Gods won their mythic struggle against the Titans, a new evil threatens the land. Mad with power, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) has declared war against humanity. Amassing a bloodthirsty army of soldiers disfigured by his own hand, Hyperion has scorched Greece in search of the legendary Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power forged in the heavens by Ares. Only he who possesses this bow can unleash the Titans, who have been imprisoned deep within the walls of Mount Tartaros since the dawn of time and thirst for revenge. In the king’s hands, the bow would rain destruction upon mankind and annihilate the Gods. But ancient law dictates the Gods must not intervene in man’s conflict. They remain powerless to stop Hyperion…until a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) comes forth as their only hope. Secretly chosen by Zeus, Theseus must save his people from Hyperion and his hordes…
Mickey Rourke is a great villain but honestly..this role didnt ask very much of him.
He plays his role effortless, it seems..which is ok, after all, this is a blockbuster sort of movie, there is not a great amount of character depth needed.
Henry Cavill, the next Superman, is a great hero, and looks the part without beeing too much of a posterboy like Brad Pitt(I think he was totally awful in Troy). I hope he gets to make lots of movies after this and Superman. Before this, he didnt do anything that would make you think of him as a leading man. Hope that has changed now…
Steven Dorff, as much as I like him, feels like a miscast…he doesnt have the height to portay a warrior, id take seriously. That didnt stop him from beeing an awesome vampire in Blade, but a greek warrior he is not. Still, with a lot going for it, it also has its downsides…when all was said and done, I didnt feel like Ive seen something with longterm value…. its entertaining, yes, but the story, as complicated as it may seem, feels soulless, sometimes rushed, simple….its no epic that can stand the test of time,,,thats what I feel about it…..I much prefer writing positive stuff or a total 2 thumbs down review. Writing about something that is promising, but in the end feels dissapointing, I dunno..I have trouble with…..wasting my time writing about a so-so movie, lol…im so impatient with stuff like this….maybe i should stick to the stuff i love and leave the other movies to someone else to review.
In the end…its entertaining, but I didnt feel for the hero that much……or the whole story in general….its visually awesome fast food.
Sorry Tarsem, but this I have no desire to see more than once. It didnt make me feel like The Fall did.
