THE WRESTLER (2008) feels like yesterday , though

Directed by Darren Aronofsky

This is a drama about an aging professional wrestler, decades past his prime, who now barely gets by working small wrestling shows in VFW halls and as a part-time grocery store employee. As he faces health problems that may end his wrestling career for good he attempts to come to terms with his life outside the ring: by working full time at the grocery store, trying to reconcile with the daughter he abandoned in childhood and forming a closer bond with a stripper he has romantic feelings for. He struggles with his new life and an offer of a high-profile rematch with his 1980s arch-nemesis, The Ayatollah, which may be his ticket back to stardom.(imdb written by Matlock6)

Well, what to say about this movie?

As the word movie implies, it moved me.

It was a blast to watch  the first time, and I watched it again shortly after, cuz one tends to miss a few things at  first viewing. But since then I haven`t seen it again, and the reason for it is simple…it `s a

pretty sad movie. It`s a great, great film, but it is nothing  that makes you feel good.

I appreciate the great actors and the story, and I love Mickey Rourke to death.

But it is that great of a drama, at least to me, that it is actually tough to watch.

Even Mickey Rourke admits , he never saw the movie in full, because it has too many similarities to his own story, that he just can`t watch it. It made Roddy Piper cry , as well.

But I am so happy he did this movie, and eventhough he already was getting  more and more roles at the time, this put him back on the A-list in Hollywood.

The director Aronofsky wanted Rourke for the role from the very beginning, the studio wanted Nicolas Cage. He fought for Rourke, and therefore, the budget got cut significantly.

To help his friend Rourke out, W. Axl Rose donated the use of „Sweet Child O´Mine“ free of charge.

I`m  really, really glad Mickey is back working A-list movies. I followed his career even through the bad times, which spawned some worthwhile movies, nevertheless. Like Lance Henriksen, he makes even bad movies worth watching, and be it only for his appearance. He made „Double Team“ fun to watch, and was welcome in „SPUN“.

God, I just Love Mickey.

Check out the trivia to THE WRESTLER, it is damn interesting.

  1. I love this movie too. I was fortunate enough to see it in the theater during Oscar season. It was bad luck on Rourke’s part that this came out the same year that Sean Penn was amazing in Milk, otherwise he would’ve been a lock for the best actor Oscar. Great stuff.

Great, great film. It was just the role Rourke needed to show people that he can in fact act. I actually thought that it would have been really cool to see Roddy Piper in this role too. I’ll bet he coulda pulled it off. Wouldn’t have that been something?
    Great review buddy!
