THE CAR(1977) – directed by Elliott Silverstein
This movie caught my eye, as I was surfing other Review-Sites, This time namely http://seriousexploitation.blogspot.com , And it sounded intriguing. I`ve seen CHRISTINE , and i`ve read THE BUICK, but this movie was made pre-Christine, so I thought it might be worth a look, because , at least it isn`t a ripp-off from that well-know Stephen King novel and movie.
And I have to say , I was not dissappointed. It is a beautifully shot film, the desert town this plays in is surrounded by awesome looking mountains, it`s Utah, if im not mistaken… The car of the title doesn`t waste no time, the first scene gets right to it…its first victims are two biking teens, who just wanna enjoy a ride through the beautiful landscape on these mountain roads. But it`s not before a young hitch-hiker gets run over in front of the eyes of an older couple, that the police gets involved . Later , the two teens get found, and the car that killed the hitch-hiker is a likely suspect. Sheriff Wade Parent ( James Brolin) has a killer car on his hands. A killer car, that, according to a witness, didn`t even have a driver in the seat.At that time, more than one of them needs a drink to cope with this crazy situation. They try to seal off the area with roadblocks and patrol cars on strategic places. But the car keeps on doing its evil work, scaring a whole bunch of people at a parade rehearsal, outside of town. Needless to say, everybody gets more scared by the minute… The car, a 1971 Lincoln Mark III, is designed by custom king George Barris of Munsters and Batman vehicle fame.
It is never explained why the car is doing what it`s doing, making it even more mysterious and suspenseful. It could have spawned a sequel easily, but I guess it`s ok not to do so, it stands very well on its own. What I also liked was the pace of the movie…it didn`t go too fast, made time to establish characters and suspense. Movies from the seventies didn`t have the fast cuts we noadays are so used to. Also the blood level is pretty low, it is not a gory horror movie at all. Its all about the suspense and mystery. These days, you probably would get a more gory version a la Final Destination, or else it might be considered lame. But let me assure you, this movie isn`t lame at all. It works just fine, even without buckets of blood. Acting of everybody is good , and the script isn’t afraid to kill off characters you got to like during the film. There aren’t much flaws in this movie, and even if you notice one or two, it doesn`t take away from the overall great execution(Execution, haha…) Some scenes will surprise you, I am sure…and in the end , maybe you`ll thank me for pointing you towards this movie. I know I enjoyed it! (Hellford667-2011)
I won`t post the trailer, because it gives away way too much.
